Varabyova I.U.
Problems of culture and religion according to Pavel Florensky. pp. 23--27

Summary: Pavel Florenski is a remarkable personality in Russian culture of the early 20th century who played important role in solving the problem of correlation of culture and religion. He distinguished 2 types of culture: Medieval and Renaissance, prefering the former where principle of one truth was proclaimed. This truth was trust in God who granted the gift of creation to man. In the Renaissance and the New Time this truth was forsaken, secular culture came to the fore. It was seeking the right direction, yet the succeeding trends led to blind alleys. At the beginning of 20th century culture was facing a dilemma: abandon the rest of Christian culture or reassess the situation and come back to the roots. The first choice is fatal because culture is aimed at self-destruction. The alternative route offered by P. Florensky implies confession -- admit our sins and recognize superiority of the Creator, but not a man. Ideas of the philosopher are revelant nowadays since culture is at the crossroads. Top priority todey is to make the right choice.
